Whitefield became an IT hub starting 1990s when the IT boom of Bangalore turned it as a major suburb, and it is now a major part of Greater Bangalore.

Whitefield is popular for Sathya Sai Baba's ashram called Brindavan and Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences. Now with the setup of ITPL and ITPB parks it is home to many Information technology companies. International Tech Park Limited(ITPL) also known as International Tech Park Bangalore(ITBP) is a major The IT hub with home to many IT companies such as Caterpillar, Societe Generale, Aegis, Mu Sigma, Accenture, Hewlett Packard, AIG, Tesco, Capgemini, Dell, Schneider Electric, Huawei, Unilever, GE Healthcare, Flipkart, IPsoft, General Motors, Xerox, Conduent, AT&T, Soais, Sharp, Scientific Games, Medtronic, iGATE, IBM, GE, Airtel, Vodafone, Moving Picture Company, TCS, Startek, Gyansys Infotech, Technicolor, Atos, Unisys, Delphi, Huawei, Oracle, Perot Systems , Applied Materials, GalaxE Solutions, First American Corporation and other medium and small sized companies.

There is a huge cluster of IT companies around ITPL/ITPB as well with companies such as Dell, Tesco, Shell, Aviva, GM, Schneider Electric, Sapient, Goodrich / UTC aerospace and DaimlerChrysler, Symphony Teleca Corp, Tangoe and more having offices there.

This has caused a huge demand to residential rentals around the area and there is a surge of construction activity with many flats, houses of various formats built there. 1BHK furnished, 1BHK semi furnished, 2bhk Furnished, 2 BHK semi furnished, studio and single room flats forming a major chunk of flats and houses for rent in whitefield there.

Areas around whitefield such as Kundalahalli, Marathalli, Hoodi, Siddapura, Varthur, Mahadevpura also seeing a huge surge in demand for residential houses for rent. Studio, 1BHK, 2bhk forming a major portion of inventory which are available in both as semi furnished and fully furnished homes.

Whitefield has started seeing a boom in residential construction since the latter half of 1990s and especially during 2002 and onwards. There are 2 major 4-lane roads connecting Bangalore city with Whitefield namely Whitefield road via Mahadevapura and Varthur road(HAL Old Airport Road) via Marathahalli. Both roads intersect with Karnataka State highway 35 (SH 35) which runs in the North-South direction (Siddlaghatta in the north to Anekal in the south).

Various shopping malls like The Forum Value, Phoenix Market City, Park square mall, Forum shantiniketan mall, VR bangalore Mall and Inorbit Mall resides in Whitefield area due to the large number of residential flats and houses that have emerged here.

Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre is the other major super-speciality hospital in Whitefield. Whitefield also has extensive city bus connectivity with a wide range of services offered by BMTC. A Traffic and Transit Management Centre (TTMC) in EPIP is now functional with schedules connecting it with most areas of the city. The much anticipated Namma Metro project is expected to cater to Whitefield under Phase 2. The Purple line will be extended from Byappanahalli to Whitefield covering 13 stations in between.
